Learn To Play

The Learn to Play program at Troy Albany Hockey Association is designed for young players who are looking to improve their skating and learn more about the game of hockey.  The Learn to Play program will focus on skating skills as well as basic hockey skills such as stick handling, passing and shooting.  This program is a 1 or 2 day a week program and will run for 16 weeks starting mid-October, ending the end of February.  

The Learn to Play program will be run out of 2 rinks this year (Frear Park and Albany County Hockey Facility), and players will have the option of registering for 1 day or 2 days a week.  The 1 day a week program will cost $160.00 and the 2 day a week program will cost $320.00 for the 16-week session. 

When registering online for this program, you will choose either:

  • 1 day/week Frear - Monday 5:30pm-6:30pm 
  • 1 day/week ACHF - Thursday 5:50pm-6:50pm
  • 2 day/week Frear/ACHF 

Necessary equipment needed for this program:  skates, helmet with a face shield (no bike helmets), hockey pants, hockey gloves, shin guards, elbow pads, shoulder pads, hockey stick. 

TAHA has some sets of rental equipment that will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis.  The equipment can be used for the season and will need to be returned at the conclusion of the season. The sets of rental equipment include:  helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin pads and hockey pants.


All players must register with USA Hockey in order to register for Learn to Play with TAHA.  Please go to to register for the 2017-2018 season and obtain a confirmation number.  *Note, USA Hockey does not charge the registration fee to players under the age of 6. 

To register your child for the Learn to Play program with TAHA, please click on the Registration tab. 

Parents are welcome and encouraged to help out on the ice with this program.  In order to assist on the ice, parents must follow these steps:

  1. Register with USA Hockey as a coach ( and obtain a confirmation number
  2. Register with TAHA through Sports Sign Up as an assistant coach
  3. Obtain a Safe Sport Certification through USA Hockey online - CLICK HERE 
  4. Complete a Background Screen through NYSAHA - CLICK HERE  

*Note, USA Hockey requires that everyone on the ice wear a helmet, coaches do not need a face shield on their helmet.
